Effective Reading and Writing Skills (Rising 9th Grade) - Section II, June 18-28
Course open to Branson and non-Branson students.
Freshman English class poses a number of challenges for new high school students; teachers will expect 9th-graders to annotate their readings and to write analytical essays in which they make complex arguments about texts. In this two-week, intensive course, students will refine their critical reading abilities and strengthen their writing. Regular class activities include close examination and discussion of stories and essays, development of new and sophisticated sentence styles, and consistent writing practice, especially as pertains to the analytical essay. Students will work to develop effective thesis statements alongside organizing their ideas, incorporating evidence, reviewing punctuation and grammar, and revising and editing their work. At the end of the course, each student will receive a detailed analysis of his or her writing and a list of areas to address in English class during the following year. As this course draws on practices and exercises employed by Branson's 9th Grade English Team, students will enter high school with skills and strategies to succeed in their early high school career.
